William P. Doherty. Jr., age 77, of Wareham, formerly of Norwood, passed away on Thursday, May 1, 2014 at The Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. He was the beloved husband of the late Linda Daum-Doherty to whom he was wed for 17 years at the time of her death on March 24, 2013.
Born in Arlington, MA on November 10,1936, he was a son of the late William P., Sr., and Rosalie E. (Gallivan) Doherty.
Bill grew up in Quincy and was a graduate of Arch Bishop Williams High School. He also graduated from Northeastern University, and later graduated and received his M.B.A. from Boston University.
Prior to retiring, Mr. Doherty was a Professor of Business at Eastern Nazarene College and Boston University. He had formerly worked for 45 years as an Executive at the New England Telephone Co. in Boston.
A resident of Wareham for over 25 years, Bill served as a former member of the Wareham School Committee. He was an associate member of the Little Harbor Country Club in Wareham where in the 1990’s, he hit a hole-in-one.
As a youth he obtained the distinctive rank of Eagle Scout while a member of the Boy Scouts, and as an adult passed on his knowledge while serving as a Scout Leader.
Mr. Doherty was an avid New England sports fan whose favorite team to cheer on was the Boston Red Sox. His other hobbies included boating and sailing on beautiful Buzzards Bay, and dabbling in real estate.
He is survived by his devoted children; Marsha J. Hayes and her husband Keith of Mansfield, Charles S. Doherty and his wife Lisa of Cumberland, RI, and Sandra J. Doherty and her significant other Larry of Mansfield. He was the dear brother of Robert Doherty and his wife Nancy of Braintree and Jane Rowell of Holbrook. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren; Matthew, Marc, Amber, Jack and Kayla, as well as 4 nieces and 2 nephews
Visiting hours, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Tuesday, May 6th from 4:00-7:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main St., Mansfield.
A funeral service will be held at the conclusion of visitation on Tuesday evening at 7:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home. Burial will be held privately in the Agawam Cemetery, Wareham
