Obituary

John J. Voellings, 94, of Worcester died peacefully on Wednesday, April 30th in the Golden Living Center – The Hermitage with his family by his side. He had lived the last years of his life with Alzheimer’s.
He leaves two daughters, Nancy A. Foster and her husband Thomas of Shrewsbury and Joan M. Gregg of Tampa, FL; his first wife, Ann Voellings of Shrewsbury; three brothers, Ralph Voellings of Leicester, Paul Voellings of Auburn and William Voellings of Worcester; a sister, Eleanor Perry formerly of Leicester; four grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers, Ernest, Conrad and Herman and a sister, Dorothy Morang.
He was born in Worcester the son of John and Hilda (Nelson) Voellings. John loved working with his hands, like building a house his family lived in, fishing, bowling, playing horseshoes and painting. He worked for US Steel and Wire Co. of Worcester and retired from B.H. Cutler Roofing Co. of Worcester where he worked as a roofer. Mr. Voellings belonged to the American Legion Post 462 and to the Roofers and Water proofers Local Union 33 for over 50 years.
John was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II with Company F, 180th Infantry Regiment 45th Division. The Campaigns he fought in were Rome-Arno, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star and Silver Star as well as the Purple Heart. He and his brothers all served in the armed services.
A graveside service will be held of Saturday, May 3rd at 10:00 AM from O’CONNOR BROTHERS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Park Avenue in Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton. Calling hours are Friday, May 2nd from 5:00 until 7:00 PM in the funeral home. In lieu flowers memorial contributions may be Alzheimer’s Association, 480 Pleasant Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
