WALKER, ZONA ROBBINS The remarkable spirit of Zona Robbins Walker left this world in the early hours of April 30, 2014 at the age of 97. Zona was born in Robbins, TN on April 17, 1917, and was preceded in death by her husband, Luther Wesley Walker, and a son, John Wesley Walker. Our beloved mother is survived by her daughters Carol Walker MacKay and Patricia Walker FitzGerald, who cared for her during her final months of life and who were with her at her passing; by son-law Tom FitzGerald and grandsons Garrett, Luke, and Sean FitzGerald who all helped with her care; her loving sisters, Mattie Walker and Ina Robbins; and by nieces and nephews all of whom loved her and were loved by her. Zona was retired after a long career as a teacher, a career that began in one-room schools in the mountains of east Tennessee and took her to Muldraugh, KY, and finally, to the Jefferson County schools. She was an active member of the Ashby Lane Baptist Church for many years, and was church pianist for a number of years. Throughout her life, Zona's strength of will, determination, humor, and perpetual sense of wonder kept her young at heart. Hers was a life well-lived in service to God, family, and community, and she touched the hearts and lives of countless students and others with her faith, her charity, and her love. She adored her grandsons, who brought a twinkle to her eyes and a smile to her face until the very end. Known to her grandsons and their friends as "Meemer," Zona asked little and gave much, and we are better for having loved and been loved by her. A celebration of Zona's life will be held noon Friday at Owen Funeral Home, 5317 Dixie Highway with services and burial in Oneida, TN. Visitation will be 3 - 8 p.m. Thursday and after 11 a.m. on Friday. The family would like to thank Zona's Hosparus team for the care they gave Zona during her last months of life. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to Hosparus, the Jefferson County Humane Society or Ashby Lane Baptist Church.
