William J. Newton, a 19 year resident of Malden and former longtime resident of Charlestown, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital in Melrose following an extended illness. He was 93 years old.
William was born in Boston on April 20, 1921, a son of the late James Newton and Ellen (Gallagher) Newton. He grew up in Charlestown where he was educated in the Boston Public School system and graduated from Commerce High School in Boston in 1939. He enlisted into the United States Army on September 24, 1942 and served his country with pride and honor during World War II. He was discharged on October 3, 1945 with the rank of T/Sergeant. Bill worked for many years as a custodian for the Boston Public School system and retired in 1978. He enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and watching college football games, golf and the Boston Red Sox.
Bill is the beloved husband of the late Rose Mary (Houlihan) Newton. He is the devoted father of Eileen Newton of Malden and Michael Newton and his wife Eunice of Malden. He is the loving Pop to Jennifer, Tony and Sandy, S/SGT. Julianne Unites States Air Force and Jacqueline and his great-granddaughters Paige and Tonijoy.
Bill's Funeral Services and burial at the Veterans Administration National Cemetery in Bourne will be private.
