Doris "June" Adkins, 84, of Cape Coral, FL, passed away due to health complications on April 18, 2014. She was a devoted mother and spouse, and took great pride in her family and her three sons; both Dale and David attending the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, and Dale continuing his work in academia (currently a Dean at Western Illinois University), David as a pastor of Bethabara Baptist Church in Habit until his death, and Don as a performer/administrator in the performing arts.
June was born on October 3, 1929, the daughter of Walter and Betty Langston, in Jeffersonville, IN. She graduated from Jeffersonville High School in May and married Karl D. Adkins on October 1, 1948, and they made their home in Louisville raising their three boys. June worked at the Courier Journal as the Office Manager of the News Department from the mid-1960's to 1978, when she and Karl then moved to Cape Coral, FL. Soon after moving June worked with Sun Bank in their Marketing Department until her retirement in 1995. Over the last number of years June has been active in various bridge groups, and was a member of Faith Presbyterian Church in Cape Coral. Known for her quick wit and sense of humor, she maintained contact with her large circle of friends and acquaintances though emailing and forwarding many humorous, as well as inspirational emails. She was also the proud caretaker of her Shih tzu (Danny) for 12 wonderful years.
June is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Karl (1926-1988) and her son, David (1953-1984).
She is survived by her sons Dale Adkins (Wanda) of Macomb, IL and Don Adkins of New York, NY; daughter-in-law Joanne Noel (Tim); nieces Yvonne Steward (Mike) and Melissa Lockwood (Paul), nephew Radford Guinn (Janet); grandchildren Matthew Adkins (Kelly), Hope Adkins, Sarah Noel; and great-grandchild, Elijah Adkins.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 23 at the Owen Funeral Home (Jeffersontown location) 9318 Taylorsville Road, Louisville, KY 40299. Friends may pay their respects from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 24 at 11:00am, followed by burial at Cave Hill Cemetery.
