Obituary

GLOUCESTER – Martha E. (Niemi) Hill, died Sunday, April 13, 2014, in the Seacoast Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late Ezra “Huck” Hill, who was lost at sea while aboard the f/v Austin W in January of 1963.
Born in Rockport on April 27, 1909, she was the daughter of the late Emeli and Josefin (Maki) Niemi.
Martha had been employed at both Oakwood and Den-Mar Nursing Homes and later worked private duty as a caregiver.
She was a lifelong member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church. She loved to swim and spend time with friends on Front Beach. She also enjoyed painting, knitting, crocheting and quilting.
She is survived by her son, Edwin Hill; two daughters and sons-in-law, Elizabeth and Ernest Becker, Doris and Bruce Nelson; eleven grandchildren, thirty-two great-grandchildren and twenty-three great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She will also be missed by “her girls” Joan, Barbara, Lois and Holly. She was predeceased by two daughters and a son-in-law, Shirley L. Curley and Marie Jacobson; a sister, Evelyn McGrath; six brothers, Solomon, Ernest, Verner, Bill, Lauri and George Niemi, and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 26th at the St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1123 Washington Street, Lanesville at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. There are no visiting hours. Interment will be held in the Seaside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1123 Washington Street, Gloucester.
