After 99 amazing years, Alfred H. Vincent went to his eternal life on April 14, 2014.
He was the eldest son of the late Delphine Boudreau Vincent and Wilfred F. Vincent, and was born on 1/29/1915 in New Bedford, MA. Al was raised in Amesbury, MA and graduated Amesbury High School in 1934. On May 27, 1939 he married Carrie Mae Goodrich to whom he was married for 72 years. They became lifelong residents of the Eastern Pt. area and in 1957 relocated to the Starr Hill area of Groton.
During WWII he was a welder at Electric Boat and later worked for Robert Gair/Continental Can as a draftsman in the Engineering Department. Al retired from the Groton Utilities Engineering Dept. in 1985.
He and Carrie enjoyed their retirement years with family and traveling throughout the US, Canada, Caribbean, South America and Europe. Al loved the Panama Canal and visiting Alaska’s Denali National Park and the pipeline. The only thing left on his bucket list was the Egyptian pyramids. They were also active with the Groton Seniors.
With his French Canadian background he was an avid sportsman enjoying hockey, football, swimming, tennis, and skiing which he enjoyed well into his 80’s. Carrie got him into camping on his condition that hot/cold running water and a flush toilet were necessities and into hiking and canoeing.
Alfred is survived by his daughter, Barbara V. Harry of Groton and his granddaughter Stephanie Harry of Beltsville, MD and a sister, Alma Gallent of Amesbury, MA and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, wife, and sisters Florence Burke, Rose Burke and Lorraine Vincent and brothers George and Amie Vincent.
A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 10:00am at St. James Episcopal Church, 76 Federal Street, New London. Burial will follow in Starr Hill Burial Ground, Lestertown Road, Groton. There are no calling hours.
