Sister Helen McCue (formerly Sister M. Jerome), 93, a Sister of Mercy for 70 years, died Monday, April 14, 2014, after a period of declining health. Sister Helen was born in Newport, Rhode Island, and lived in Newfields and Portsmouth, New Hampshire. She was the daughter of Harry and Helen (Howard) McCue.
Sister Helen received her B.A. degree in education from Mount Saint Mary College in Hooksett, New Hampshire. For many years she was a dedicated teacher in Catholic elementary schools in New Hampshire and Massachusetts. She taught at St. Raphael School, Manchester; St. John School, Laconia; Sacred Heart School, Nashua; St. Patrick School, Berlin; St. Bernard School, Keene; Sacred Heart School, Hampton; and St. Joseph School, Nashua, all in New Hampshire. She was also a teacher at St. Ann School in Gloucester, Massachusetts. For 15 years Sister Helen served as assistant secretary at St. Patrick School in Portsmouth. From 1994 until 2007, she was a volunteer at St. Christopher School in Nashua. Her retirement years were spent at the Warde Health Center in Windham, New Hampshire.
Family members include her cousins, Sister Mary Griffin of Windham, New Hampshire; Peter Victory of Salem, Massachusetts; and John O’Brien of Newfields, New Hampshire. She was pre-deceased by two brothers, John and Paul McCue.
By Sister Helen’s request, there will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, April 21, at 11 a.m., in Our Lady of Mercy Chapel, Warde Health Center, 21Searles Road, Windham, New Hampshire. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Bedford, N.H.
