Obituary


Charles W. Laverty, 87, a lifelong resident of Lawrence died on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at the Henry C. Nevins Home in Methuen.


He was born in Lawrence, MA on August 11, 1926 to John & Annie (Reynolds) Laverty, and educated in Lawrence Schools. He enlisted at the age of 17 into the United States Navy, and was drafted to the Navy Seabees, attaining the rank of 3rd Class Carpenters Mate, serving in the Guam and Iwo Jima Campaigns during WWII from 1944 to 1946. He started at the Lawrence Fire Department in April of 1948. In 1963 he attained the rank of Lieutenant, he received the a Commendation for rescuing a man that fell into a canal from drowning from the North Canal in Lawrence, that same year he became a certified recovery scuba diver. Later in time he rose through the ranks to Deputy Fire Chief of the City of Lawrence, until his retirement in 1991, He served for over 43 years.


He was a Charter and one of the founding members of the Fire Fighters Reliefs Inn of Lawrence, a member of the Lawrence Lodge of Elks B.P.O.E. #65 and a former member of Local 146 of Lawrence.


He was known for his ball room dancing with his wife Marion having danced the Tango for a lifetime, in fact that is why he named his dog Tango. He loved and adored his family.


He is survived by his loving wife Marion (Fiedler) Laverty and his son; Edwin J. RN & his wife Nancy Laverty of Newburyport, three grand daughters, Elizabeth, Meredith, and Allison, as well as three great grand daughters: Ella Mae, Lily Marion, and Nora, and several nieces and nephews.


A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, April 11, 2014 at 10:00AM at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Lawrence. A burial will follow in the Ridgewood Cemetery in North Andover.
