Susan A. (Govoni) Dalton, 66, of Townsend, formerly of Winchester, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, April 4, 2014. She grew up in Winchester, Massachusetts, the middle of three girls. She married her high school sweetheart, the late Lawrence Dalton, Jr., and they shared over 40 years of marriage until his passing in 2011.
A trained nurse, Sue worked at skilled nursing facilities and as a school nurse when her children were in school. She was a devoted mother and a wonderful cook who always had dinner on the table for her family. Fondue for New Year’s Eve was a family tradition. Family barbeques in Townsend were always fun occasions.
A lifelong avid reader, she found delight and adventure in the novels she read. She was a talented artist creating unique jewelry and knitting projects. She wove her own yarn from her lop-eared Angora rabbits. Her early love was making miniatures. She crafted elaborate representations of houses and farms and sold them through her business, Tiny Places.
Later, she began a jewelry business, Fusion by Design, which sold one-of-a-kind, handmade fused glass jewelry. Sue had a life-long love of Native American culture and traveled many times to the Southwest to experience the spirituality and beauty of the area and culture. Sue spent time on a Navajo reservation learning their weaving techniques.
Recently, Mrs. Dalton had become a community volunteer at the Townsend Senior Center. Sue loved spending time with her knitting group. She also shared her knitting talents by teaching her craft to friends and family. She adored her grandpuppies and enjoyed dog-sitting. She also enjoyed many days in Cape Elizabeth, Maine with her sister Bev and Lake Winnipesaukee with her sister Sandy.
She was the loving mother of Elizabeth A. Dalton, of Salem, MA and Lawrence V. Dalton III, of Townsend, and was also the devoted daughter of Mary M. (Ellard) Govoni-King and the late Arthur A. Govoni. Sue was the cherished sister of Beverley M. Griffin and husband David of Cape Elizabeth, ME, Sandra J. James and husband Thomas of Londonderry, NH and the dear sister-in-law of Mary Sue Stevens and husband John , Barbara D. Swanson and husband John, and Douglas E. Dalton, all of Winchester. She is further survived by many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends are invited to gather at Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester on Thurs. April 10 at 12:30 PM followed by a Graveside Service at Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester, at 1:30 PM. Visiting Hours will be held in the funeral home, on Wed., April 9 from 4-8 PM.
