Obituary

Worcester: Louise (Haffty) Awiszio, 94, died Thursday, March 27, 2014 suddenly and unexpectedly with her family by her side. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Harry Awiszio, a daughter Desiree Awiszio; a son Edward Awiszio and his wife Mary-Jane of North Brookfield; a granddaughter Kimberly; many nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. Louise was pre-deceased by four brothers- Thomas, George, John, and Joseph Haffty; and five sisters- Nora Haffty, Mabel Scoggins, Sally Jensen, Nora Young, and Georgette Borek.

Louise was born in Worcester, daughter of Norman and Mary (Wood) Haffty and has lived here all her life. She graduated from Commerce High School in Worcester in 1938. She furthered her education attending and graduating from a secretarial/clerking school. She worked several years for Wickwire Spencer as secretary in their sales office. Then, she took a job as secretary at Thomas Smith Company. In June 1956 she was married and took a job as secretary to the Executive Vice President of Jamesbury Corp. Louise was a stay-at-home Mom raising children and became a school crossing guard for 41 years. In 2005, the Worcester School Committee awarded Louise with a Certificate of Appreciation for 35 years of dedicated service to the Worcester Public Schools. In 2011, she received a Citation from the Massachusetts House of Representatives in recognition of her 41 years of dedicated, responsible, and trustworthy service to the Worcester public schools. She retired from work at age 91. Louise was also a member of Saint George Orthodox Cathedral in Worcester. She enjoyed music, cooking, and was an avid walker and enjoyed exercise.

Calling hours will be held at Saint George Orthodox Cathedral, 30 Anna St., Worcester, Wednesday, April 2, from 5-8 pm. The funeral service will be held at Saint George Orthodox Cathedral on Thursday, April 3, with calling hours from 9-9:45 am and the funeral service at 10 am. Burial will follow in Hope Cemetery. Nordgren Memorial Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations in Louise's memory may be made to St. George Orthodox Cathedral 30 Anna St. Worcester, MA.
