Meredith---- Irene Flanders, 100, passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at Lakes Region General Hospital in Laconia. She had been a resident of Golden View Health Care Center in Meredith.
Irene was born on July 25, 1913, in Alexandria, the daughter of Herbert and Jennie Tenney. She married John F. Flanders, at age 17, and they moved to Bristol where they lived for 27 years. In the early 50’s, they moved to Center Harbor where they lived for 50 years. She and her husband, John, enjoyed working in their vegetable garden.
Irene did housekeeping for families around the Lakes Region for 14 years. She always kept her own home looking good. Through the years, she was employed at the Laconia Hospital, the Belknap County Nursing Home and the Asbestos Mill in Meredith.
Irene loved to be with other people. She never liked being alone and enjoyed visits from her family. She liked to cook and was fond of animals. She always had a dog or cat.
After selling her home in Center Harbor, she moved to Ashland. She was a resident of White Mountains Courts. At 94, she was presented with the Boston Post Cane for being the oldest citizen of the town. She didn’t stop driving until she was 94.
Irene was known for her beautiful smile! She contributed her remarkable longevity to always being happy. Her nieces, nephews and friends will miss her.
Irene is survived by several nephews and nieces. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her infant son, Roland, her husband, John, two brothers, Cecil Tenney and Howard Tenney, one sister, Lois Grace, and a son, Richard Flanders, who passed away in August of 2013.
There will be no calling hours.
Graveside services will be held later in the spring at the Oakland Cemetery in Meredith.
