Whitman – Margaret M. “Rita” (Smyth) Odom 68, a longtime resident of Whitman, died Monday March 24 after a brief illness. She was the beloved wife of 48 years to Thomas E. Odom.
Born in Ireland she was the daughter of the late Felix and Catherine (McGary) Smyth.
Rita had immigrated to the United States in 1964 and had been a resident of South Boston for ten years before moving to Whitman where she remained for over forty years.
For many years Rita had worked for H & R Block as a qualified IRS enrolled agent.
In addition to her loving husband Thomas she is survived by her son Brendan Odom, Sr. of NH, her grandsons Kevin and Niall Odom of Whitman and Mathew and Brendan Odom Jr. of NH, her brothers Liam Smyth of Ireland, Kenneth Smyth and his wife Sharon of South Boston, and her sister Eileen McCarthy and her husband John Jr. of South Boston. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews Sean Smyth, Catherine Carroll and John McCarthy III as well as her great nieces and nephews Michael and George Carroll, and Olivia and John McCarthy IV. She was the mother of the late Colleen Odom and sister of the late George Smyth.
Her funeral service will be held Friday March 28 at 8 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman. Visiting hours will be held prior to the service from 6-8 PM.
