Obituary

MARLBOROUGH: Doris H. (Twombly) Russell, 92, died peacefully and comfortably surrounded by all of those who loved her including her children, her daughter-in-laws and granddaughter on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at the Oak Knoll Healthcare Center following a brief illness.
She was born in Dorchester on June 30, 1921 the daughter of the late Lillia Mae (Shattuck) Twombly and Stanley M. Irish.
She is survived by her devoted and loving children Lynn L. Russell of Westfield; Judith A. Russell of Cambridge; Paul S. Russell and his wife Ellen of Framingham; Steven K. Russell and his wife Patricia of Sutton; Raymond Andrew Russell of North Grafton; Amy A. Russell of Dover, NH and Dana A. Russell of Brookline. Cherished grandmother of Chelsea E Mower of Dover, NH. Sister-in-law of Warren M. Russell of East Hartford, CT. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. She was the beloved wife for 56 years of the late Raymond J. Russell who died in December of 1999.
Doris spent her formative years in the Hampden and West Haven area of Connecticut. She had been a resident of Wayland for over 25 years before she and her husband retired to Port Richey, FL where they spent 20 years. Doris moved to Marlborough in 2001 to be closer to her family.
She was an honor student graduating with the Class of 1939 from Hampden High School. She attended and graduated with the Class of 1942 from the Hartford Hospital School of Nursing. She was a registered nurse at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT and later she worked at Hartford Hospital. In June of 1943, she married Raymond J. Russell when he was on leave from the Army during World War II. She was a homemaker for all the years that her children were in school and then was a home health care nurse for the VNA at Parmenter in Wayland and also volunteered at Wayside Hospice.
Doris was an active member of the Community United Methodist Church in Cochituate and was awarded for her 40 years of membership in a ceremony and church service a few years ago at the church. She also taught Sunday school and participated in the annual church fairs. While residing in Florida she was active at the United Methodist Church of Port Richey as well as volunteering at the Community Hospital in Port Richey. She loved spending time with her family and one of her favorite activities was to entertain her visiting children from the north. She was a giving person who was devoted to her faith and her family, and will be greatly missed by them.
Her family wishes to warmly thank the staff at Oak Knoll Healthcare Center in Framingham and the staff at New Horizons in Marlborough for their wonderful and compassionate care of Doris during the last few weeks before her passing.
Her family will receive family and friends on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 from 10:00 to 11:00 am in the Bryant Memorial Chapel of the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (Off Rte30), Wayland followed by her Memorial Service at 11:00 am.
Interment will be held at a later date at the Beaverdale Memorial Park in New Haven, CT.
