Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Jeanne B. (Hudon) Garatti, 84, of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, March 20, 2014. She passed into Eternal Life at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family and her wonderful caregivers. She was born in Holyoke on June 25, 1929, a beloved daughter of the late Frank C. and Adouilda (St. Cyr) Hudon. She was raised in the Willimansett section of Chicopee and later lived in Chicopee Falls before moving to Springfield in 1955. Jeanne was employed for many years as a Certified Nurse Assistant at local nursing homes. For 35 years, she was a charter member of the Springfield Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary 68 where she served as their treasurer. Along with her husband, Victor, they both received recognition for the many years they volunteered with the Disabled American Veterans in sponsoring events at the Holyoke Soldiers Home and the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Leeds. Jeanne and Victor also volunteered for many years with the Veterans Activities Committee and the Open Pantry, both in Springfield. She was an active member of the Women’s Guild and a communicant at Our Lady of Hope Church and Mary, Mother of Hope Church, both in Springfield where she earned the nickname of “The Cake Lady”. She leaves her beloved husband and best friend, Victor J. Garatti. They were married on May 14, 1949 at the former Saint George Church in Chicopee Falls and were blessed with over 64 years of happiness together. She also leaves her four loving children, Gloria J. Salemi and her life partner, Steven Robert, David J. Garatti, Elaine M. Blazejowski, and Linda A. Fidalgo and her husband, Todd; her four cherished grandchildren, Dominick Salemi and his wife, Nanette, Sara Robitaille and her husband, Keith, Paul Blazejowski and his wife, Rebecca, and Halley Fidalgo; and her five cherished great grandchildren, Gianna and Vanessa Salemi, Nathan and Cole Robitaille, and Morgan Blazejowski. Jeanne also leaves a special friend, Diane Marini, as well as many other dear friends. Besides her parents, she was also predeceased by her infant son who was Called Home to Heaven in 1952; and her dear step-brother, Maurice Hudon. Her funeral will be held on Monday morning, March 24, 2014 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Mary, Mother of Hope Church, 840 Page Boulevard, East Springfield, MA 01104. Her burial will follow the Mass at Saint Michael Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, March 23, 2014 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Her family has requested that memorial donations be made in her memory to either the Holyoke Soldiers Home Trustee Fund, 110 Cherry Street, Holyoke, MA 01040 or to the Shriners Hospital for Children, (Specify Springfield), 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
