Michael S. Barnes

Augusta, GA – A memorial service for Michael Stegall Barnes, 76, who passed away March 17, 2014 will be conducted March 22, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. from St. John United Methodist Church, 736 Greene Street, Augusta, GA. Rev. Ed Nelson officiating, assisted by Rev. Gary DeMore.

Interment will be private.

Michael, a native of Augusta, graduated from the Academy of Richmond County, and continued his education at Young Harris College and the University of Georgia before joining his father and two brothers in the family business, Augusta Building Supply. He and his family lived in the Atlanta area for 26 years during which time he was employed by Arch Chemicals, Inc. He retired from that company in 2003. He served his country in the United States Army.

He enjoyed his retirement playing golf, fishing, working in his yard, and walking his Scottish Terrier Mac, but most of all he enjoyed his friends from all over the United States and several foreign countries. He was a charter member of the West Augusta Rotary Club, a member of the Wednesday Morning Beaufort Breakfast Club, served on the Augusta/Richmond County Ports Authority, served on the Advisory Board for the Richmond County Juvenile Court, an SAE at UGA and a member of Gridiron. He attended St. John United Methodist Church and was a member of the Misfits Sunday School Class.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Bettie, and children Sheila Barnes Diaf of Lilburn, Georgia and Joel Michael Barnes (Kristie) of Lawrenceville, Georgia; three grandchildren, Anna Barnes, Anya Diaf and Kaitlyn Barnes; his brother Rev. Travis Barnes (Kathy) of Tiger, Georgia, sister-in-law Anne P. Barnes, cousin George Barnes (Willene) and a number of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother Beatrice McCall Barnes, father Newton Travis Barnes, and brother David N. Barnes.

Honorary Pallbearers are Dr. Lamar Fleming, Dr. Richard Magruder, J. Maxwell Vallotton, Samuel F. Maguire, Charles Goodwin, Dr. Harry Harper, Dr. Bill Clark and Cecil Faircloth.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. John United Methodist Church or to the charity of your choice.

The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall.
