GLOUCESTER: Elinor Condit Winslow (Mrs. Andrew N. Winslow, Jr.), 109, died peacefully on March 13, 2014, at her home on Way Road, East Gloucester, with her family and caregivers close by.
Mrs. Winslow, affectionately called “Mimi” by her grandchildren and great grandchildren, was born in West Newton, on July 22, 1904, the daughter of Sears B. and Mary Louise (Hoyt) Condit, Jr. She was predeceased by her sister Louise Condit. She grew up in Brookline and lived most of her life on Chestnut Street, Beacon Hill, Boston, summering at Way Road from early childhood, first in her parent’s house “On a Ledge” and later in the house she and her husband acquired across the street, into which she moved permanently in 1995.
Mrs. Winslow was educated at the Park School in Brookline and at the Brimmer and May School. In 1925 she married Andrew N. Winslow, Jr., who attended Harvard and was a principal in the investment firm of Chase, Whiteside, West and Winslow, until his death in 1967.
In Boston, Mrs. Winslow volunteered during the Second World War as a plane spotter for the U.S. Army Signal Corps. She was also a member of the Ladies Visiting Committee of the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary. For many years she was a member of the Vincent Club. She and her husband were members of The Somerset Club and The Country Club. In Gloucester, she and her husband were proprietary members of The Bass Rocks Beach Club and members of The Bass Rocks Golf Club and The Eastern Point Yacht Club. Mrs. Winslow enjoyed curling, playing tennis and golf, skiing, and sailing with her family. She was a true Bruins fan, having seen her first game with her father in the 1920s at the old Boston Arena. Her family had season tickets for years and she got to know some of the players personally. She attended her last game at the age of ninety, but still watched the games on television and continued to follow the latest team news.
Mrs. Winslow is survived by her son, Sears C. Winslow, and his wife Carolyn, of North Andover and Franconia, NH, and her daughter, Judith Winslow Walcott, partner of Peter Anastas, of Gloucester.
