SALEM - Henry Olszewski, 83, husband of Louise (Zbikowski) Olszewski, of Salem, died Sunday morning, March 9, 2014, at his home.
Born in Salem, he was the son of the late Wladyslaw and Helena (Sychowski) Olszewski.
A Navy veteran of the Korean War, Mr. Olszewski enlisted in the Navy in 1948 and served two tours of active duty as well as serving with the Navy Reserve. He was discharged in 1958 and served on the USS Kearsarge and the USS Kula Gulf during his military career.
Henry was employed by the City of Salem and was the head custodian at the Salem Public Library. Following his retirement, he continued to work in his position on a part time basis until into his seventies, for a total of 38 years.
A lifelong resident of the city, he was a communicant of the St. John the Baptist Church, where he sang in the choir and was a member of the Holy Name Society. He was a member of the PLAV, Post 55, Salem.
Besides his wife, with whom he shared 43 years of marriage, he is survived by two sons, John and his wife Christine Olszewski of Salem, Thomas Olszewski of Salem, one grandchild, Penelope James of Taunton and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Chester Olszewski, Edward Olszewski, Genevieve Olszewski and John Olszewski.
His funeral service will be held Thursday, March 13, 2014 at 9 am from the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem, followed by a funeral Mass at the St. John the Baptist Polish Church at 10 AM, Visiting hours are Wednesday from 6 to 8 pm. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Burial is in St. Mary Cemetery, Salem.
