Obituary

Herbert Trubek of Newton died at his home on Saturday October 16, 2004. He was 101 years old. Born in Woodridge New Jersey, he attended East Rutherford High School. He was a graduate of Steven Institute of Technology in Hoboken NJ class of 1925. After graduation, Herbert walked and hitched across the US and Europe. In 1934 he married Elizabeth (Throckmorton) and they moved to New York City. They lived there until 1936 when they moved too a farm in Jutland NJ to raise chickens. He later returned to work as an engineer, first at Taylor-Wharton and then Ingersoll-Rand in Phillipsburg NJ. In 1947 Herbert moved his family to Washington NJ where he became involved in civic affairs. He was instrumental in the founding of Warren Hills Health Center. He was a strong advocate of education and contributed to programs that increase access to higher education for all, both in New Jersey by establishing a scholarship at Warren County Community College and in the Boston area, contributing to programs at Emmanuel College. In 1985 Herbert moved to Newton MA where he became very interested in and involved with the Newton Historical Museum at the Jackson Homestead and the New Rep Theatre in Newton. In 1993 he moved to the Heritage at Vernon Court in Newton Corner, now Evans Park. During his extensive walks in that neighborhood, he met many people who became his friends. He was featured in an article in the Newton TAB in 1998 about his connection with his neighborhood through his walks. He continued his activities in the Newton Corner area for the remainder of his wife, changing his activities to playing scrabble with all who dared once his physical health did not permit him to continue walking. The beloved husband of the late Elizabeth (Throckmorton) he leaves his daughters Edith Trubek Sullivan of Oyster Bay New York, Mary Trubek of Phillipsburg NJ, Josephine Trubek of Rochester NY and Margaret Jeanne Trubek and her husband Ronald Webber of Newton. He was the brother of Martin Trubek of Andover NJ. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations in Herbert’s name may be made to The Herbert and Elizabeth Trubek Endowed Scholarship Fund at Warren County Community College, 475 Route 57 West, Washington NJ, 07882.
