Irene Gibbs Brady of North Truro, wife of David Brady, died March 4, 2014 at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis with her husband and friends by her side. She was 63.
Born in Bronx, New York, she was the daughter of the late Roger and Marguerite (Flanagan) Gibbs. Educated in New York schools, she loved school and attended Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY.
Renee had two great passions in life. She loved reading, a trait which she learned from her mother. She started reading at an early age, and that devotion developed into her career. Renee worked part time at the Mamaroneck, NY Public Library as the children’s librarian. When she and her husband moved to the Cape, she worked at the Provincetown Public Library, than located at the corner of Commercial and Freeman Sts.
She wrote many grants for children’s programs, started a summer reading program, a born to read program and many other activities to help children. She was also instrumental, working with community leaders, to bring the Library to its new location. During the troubles in Northern Ireland, she hosted boys from Belfast for 10 summers.
Her other great passion was the shore. She has lived in Edgewater Park, a cottage colony along lower Long Island Sound, and Mamaroneck, NY another shore community. Renee met David, her partner of 37 years, in Provincetown; they were married in 1976 in Pompano Beach, FL. They then moved back to the Cape. She worked for the Provincetown Advocate, now the Banner for several years. After a period of time back in Mamaroneck, they returned to North Truro in 1996.
In addition to her husband David, she is survived by several cousins and her devoted Poodle Dewey.
A Celebration of Renee’s Life will be held at a time to be announced in the spring.
