Obituary

BETTY ELLEN (PETERSEN) NAHIGIAN, Musician and Teacher, of Cohasset, formerly of Harwichport and Concord, died on Thursday, Oct. 14th at the Harbor house Nursing Center in Hingham after a long illness. She was 90. She was born in Somerville, MA on June 21, 1914 to Danish immigrants, the late Paul and the late Marie (Otto) Petersen. They moved to Bedford, MA when Betty was five years old where her family began a farm. Betty graduated from Lexington High School in 1932, and then Fisher Business College in 1933. She attended the Boston University School of Practical Arts and Letters, and was employed at Harvard University. She began her studies of piano at the age of five and earned a scholarship to study violin at the South End Music School in Boston. In the late thirties, Betty was concert mistress of the WPA Orchestra under the direction of Arthur Fiedler. She was an active freelancer and member of the Bedford Piano Trio. She continued her violin playing in the Concord Orchestra and later in the Cape Cod Symphony. For nearly three decades, Betty taught piano in her home to hundreds of Concord's young people, many of whom went on to become professional musicians themselves, including her own daughters. In 1942, Betty married Dr. Edward Nahigian at the Goddard Chapel at Tufts University. They moved to Concord, MA in 1946. While living in Concord, Betty was an active member of the Women's Club, the Concord Valley Golf Course Association, participated in serveral organizations at the First Congregational Church in Harwich, and the Harwich-Dennis branch of the Cape Cod Hospital Auxiliary. Wife of the late Dr. Edward Nahigian, Betty leaves two daughters, Joan Jensen of Cohasset and Jane Ezbicki of Framingham, and three granddaughters, Kristin, Erin and Katherine. A Memorial Service will be conducted at the First Congregational Church of Harwich, 697 Main St., Harwich, MA 02645 on Saturday, November 6th at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the First Congregational Church of Harwich or to the Alzheimer's Association, 36 Cameron St., Cambridge, MA 02140. The interment is private.
