Angel Gabriel "Gabby" Velazquez, 15, of New Bedford passed away suddenly on Sunday March 2, 2014 at Children's Hospital.
Born in New Bedford, the son of Angel D. Velazquez and Angelina M. Flores of New Bedford, he lived here all of his life.
Gabby was a student at New Bedford High School in his sophomore year, where he was a member of R.O.T.C. and the baseball team. He participated in the Citizens Afterschool Program when he attended Keith Middle School. He played baseball for Normand's Meat Specialties and Bob Viera's General Contracting in the Greater New Bedford Little League and for Katman Sports in Pony League. He also played football for the New Bedford Bears. He was a member of Champion Fitness.
He also owned his own company, Angel's Italian Ice, and loved selling Italian ices from his pushcart.
Survivors include his parents; his siblings, Ilmaris A. Flores, Deisharis Velazquez, and Angel David Velazquez, Jr.; his grandparents, Maria V. Collazo, Carmen N. Velazquez, and David C. Velazquez; his great-grandparents, Rafita Moran, Pedro Garcia, and Inocencia Ferrer; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 9 AM at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish at St. James Church. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Friday from 11 AM - 3 PM and 5:30 - 9PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. The family has requested that visitors be dressed in white or happy colorful clothing in honor of Gabby. Please do not wear black clothing.
