Obituary

WAYLAND: Babette Beinfield Newburger, 93, died peacefully and comfortably surrounded by those she loved on February 26, 2014 at her residence in Wayland.
She was born in St. Louis, MO on March 27, 1920 the daughter of the late Victor H. Beinfield and Rose (Pasternack) Beinfield.
Babette is survived by her loving and devoted daughters Betty Kornitzer of Narragansett and Mary Ann Gore and her husband Robert Friede of Concord. She was the cherished grandmother of Michael G. Kornitzer of Lithia, FL; Magda L. Schmalz of Needham; Miriam Rose Kornitzer of Somerville; Benjamin S. Kornitzer of NYC, NY; Daniel B. Gore of Somerville and Abraham A. Gore of Somerville. Sister of Dr. William H. Beinfield of NYC, NY. Also survived by nine great-grandchildren as well as her loving caregivers Wendy George and Sandra Stoddart.
Babette has been a resident of Wayland for the past 11 years and previously resided in Lincoln and New York.
She was a graduate of the Knox School when it was in Cooperstown, NY after having attended schools in Switzerland. She spent many years at the Arts Student League in New York where she was mentored by Raphael Soyer and other leading artists of the time. Babette was an accomplished painter, sculptor and designer and was well known and respected throughout the art community. She was a cartoonist for Esquire Magazine in the 1950’s with a full page color and two black and whites each month. She was also an award winning experimental film maker. She spent a great deal of time in France and loved Cape Cod as well.
Babette pursued many industrial design projects which she hoped would make a positive difference in the world. She was an advocate for human rights and worked diligently to right the wrongs in the world and to improve the environment. She was a renaissance woman and was outspoken about things that concerned her closely. She was devoted to her daughters and was so beloved by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A. Memorial Service celebrating her life will be held on Monday, March 10, 2014 at 11:00 o’clock at The First Parish in Bedford, 75 Great Rd (Rte 4/225), Bedford.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly suggests that gifts in her memory be sent to the Babette Newburger Arts Education Fund at The Emerson Umbrella, 40 Stowe Street, Concord, MA 01742.
