Albert J. Antunes of Woburn, formerly of Glendale, CA and Somerville, MA, died peacefully Friday February 21, 2014 after a brief illness. Albert would have been 85 March 1st, 2014.
Beloved son of the late Angelina (Pershake) & Antonio Antunes, of Medford. Preceded in death by his brother Robert Antunes and sisters Eleanor McCormick and Lorraine Fairweather, all of Massachusetts and dear friend and life companion of Matthew Schmidt of California.
Buddy was the Brother in law of Eugene N. Fairweather of Woburn. Also survived by nephews and nieces William Fairweather, his wife Kathleen, Alan Fairweather and his wife Laurel all of Woburn, Brenda Fairweather of Wilmington, Robert Fairweather of Tewksbury, Patty MacInnis and her husband Myron of Hudson, NH, Donna Vigneau and her husband Tom of Wilmington, Angela Powers and her husband Gary of Hanover, and Sheila Lynch and her husband Daniel of Tewksbury. Further survived by many loving east coast cousins, great nieces, nephews and friends from Glendale, CA area.
A proud Korean war veteran, Albert received the combat infantry badge, Korean War service medal, with bronze star, United Nations service medal and Army of occupation medal (Japan).
Albert loved to travel the world and did so on a regular basis with his friend and companion Matthew Schmidt. He used his skills as a photographer to document these many trips. He also had a passion for geology, collecting rocks and gems from all his travels throughout the world.
For the past two years, Albert lived at Brightview Country Club Heights Assisted living facility here in Woburn, where he thrived and made many friends. His ability to craft cross-stitch kept him busy during the year making holiday and seasonal gifts for the residents. He enjoyed bingo and traveling on trips that the country club had planned.
Albert was affectionately known as Buddy or Bud to his close friends and Uncle Buddy to his many nieces and nephews. He was a member of Holy Family Church in Glendale, CA and St. Barbara Church in Woburn. He was also a Disabled American Veteran and a member of the VFW, Veteran of Foreign Wars. He supported and was a generous contributor to these organizations including the Salvation Army.
Albert was kind, thoughtful and loving to his family, friends and anyone that had the pleasure to know him. He will be missed by all.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Barbara Church, 138 Cambridge Rd. WOBURN, Saturday March 1, 2014 at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Services will conclude with interment at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.
