Alta Lee (Gateley) Hanes of Lapel, IN passed away on Sunday, February 23rd in Pendleton, IN;
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 1, at Green Valley Church of Christ in Noblesville, IN with Paul Woodhouse officiating.
Alta Hanes was born in Campbell, MO to John & Lottie Mae Gateley on March 18, 1926. She moved to Searcy, AR, where she graduated from Searcy High School in 1944. After WW II, she attended Nursing School in Springfield, MO where she met her husband of 24 years, Guy Hanes, Jr.
Alta and her husband eventually settled in Mandeville, LA in 1957, where they raised their two sons. They both had long careers as Registered Nurses at Southeast Louisiana Hospital. Upon her husband's death in 1973, she became very active at the Forest Park Church of Christ.
Alta was a loving Christian woman, known as a prayer warrior who leaves a legacy of faith behind her. She taught children's classes, housed many visiting missionaries and preachers, and babysat many of the church member's children. After Hurricane Katrina in 2006, Alta moved to Anderson, IN to be near her son, Steve and his family. In 2011, Alta moved in with them due to her declining health and was hospitalized in November 2013 and from there moved to Rawlins House in Pendleton, IN.
Alta Hanes is preceded in death by her husband, Guy Hanes, Jr.; father, John Gateley, mother, Lottie Mae Gateley; siblings Quentin Gateley, Jr., Jane Bell, Lois Freese, Raymond Gateley and Loren Gateley.
Alta Hanes is survived by her sister, Loretta Woosley of Searcy, AR; her two sons, Steven (Monica) Hanes of Lapel; Gary (D'Wanna) Hanes of Mandeville, LA; two granddaughters, Rebekah (Justin) Tucker of Columbus, GA and Mikalah Hanes of Lapel; her favorite grandson, Caleb Hanes of Lapel; great grandson Noah Tucker of Columbus, GA.
