Obituary

CHICOPEE – Joseph L. Nadeau, 92, of the Sandy Hill section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Saturday, February 22, 2014. He passed into Eternal Life at Orchard Valley Assisted Living in Wilbraham surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family and his wonderful caregivers. He was born in Saint Marcel, Province of Quebec, Canada on September 22, 1921, a beloved son of the late Agenor and Rose De Lima (Blain) Nadeau and, in 1922, he came with his parents to Chicopee. Joe served his country in the United States Army during World War II with Company H of the 261st Infantry Regiment and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He served in the battles of Rhineland and Central Europe and received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Army of Occupation Medal of Germany, the World War II Victory Medal and was recently awarded a Bronze Star. Following his military service, he returned to the area and was employed as a machinist at Quabbin Industries in Springfield and later at their Westover Plant in Chicopee. He was last employed at the Magnat Industries in Easthampton. During his leisure time, Joe was a passionate wood worker and enjoyed many hours in his wood working shop at his home. He made many different wood items but was well known throughout the area for his beautiful handcrafted grandfather clocks. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Elder Council 69 in Chicopee and a communicant of Sainte Rose de Lima Church in Chicopee. He was a loving man who adored his family and showered them with his love and affection which was returned to him a thousand fold. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, Nella M. (Remillard) Nadeau who was Called Home on March 23, 2005. They were married on May 24, 1941 at the former Saint Thomas Aquinas Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 63 years of happiness together. He leaves his two devoted children, Arline L. Cambo of Ludlow, and David J. Nadeau and his wife, Mary, of East Longmeadow; his six cherished grandchildren, Joanne Shaw and her husband, Paul, and William Eagen, V, and his wife, Marcy, all of Ludlow, Kenneth Eagen and his wife, Tara, of Feeding Hills, Joseph Nadeau and his partner, Aimee, of Atlanta, GA, Christopher Nadeau and his wife, Jessica, and Brian Nadeau and his partner, Jessica, all of East Longmeadow; his eight cherished great grandchildren, Allison Aurnhammer, Benjamin Shaw and Caitlin Shaw, William Eagen, VI, Liam Eagen, Dylan Eagen, and Patrick Eagen, and Declan Eagen; his dear brother, Ralph Nadeau of East Longmeadow; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, and extended members of the Nadeau and Remillard families. Besides his parents, his wife and his 14 siblings, he was also predeceased by his loving daughter, Marie Nadeau; and his loving son-in-law, David Cambo who was Called Home on May 27, 2011. His funeral will be held on Thursday morning, February 27, 2014 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His Committal Service with US Army Military Honors will follow the Mass at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, February 26, 2014 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. His family has requested that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Alzheimers Association, 264 Cottage Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
