George W. Harkins, Jr., 82, of New Bedford died February 22, 2014 at St. Luke's Hospital after a long illness.
He was the husband of Dorothy S. (Arruda) Estrella Harkins.
Born and raised in Malden, the son of the late George W. and Eldora M. (Callinan) Harkins and the step-son of Josephine Harkins of New Bedford, he lived in Dartmouth and New Bedford most of his life.
He was a member of the Christian Fellowship Center.
Mr. Harkins was formerly employed by A&P Grocery Store for over 20 years while working nights at the Providence Post Office. He later worked over 20 years with the New Bedford Housing Authority until his retirement.
Mr. Harkins was an avid golfer, bowler and a New England sports fan. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Laura Roberson of Tacoma, WA; a step-son, Joseph Estrella of New Bedford; 4 grandchildren, Nicole Costa, Brandon Estrella, Shaylee Estrella and Sarah Estrella; 5 great-grandchildren, Brianna, Devin, Jasmine, Ariana and Carlos; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the step-father of the late David Estrella.
