Obituary

William Sestak Ryan passed away February 20, 2014 in Ojai, California. Aged 87.

Born May 15, 1926 in Salem, Oregon to William E. Ryan and Silva (Sestak) Ryan. His early years were spent growing up in Stayton, Oregon (near Salem). Bill attended Oregon State University, earning a bachelor’s degree in Business. World War II brought a hiatus to his education years when he enlisted in the United States Army, serving with the 10th Mountain Division as a mule skinner working toward the liberation of Italy. At the conclusion of the war in Europe, he spent time in North Africa waiting for the invasion of Japan. The end of the war in Japan allowed him to return home without setting foot in the Japanese islands.

After completing college he owned several businesses in the Northwest. His first business involved the rebuilding of automotive parts at the George Faulkner Company. Bill saw the “writing on the wall” with automotive part rebuilding and transitioned into pleasure boat and marine parts wholesaling. He sold and retired from his company, West-Line Marine Sales, in about 2006.

Bill loved the water and spent as much time as he could as an enthusiastic and skilled sailor and powerboat captain. He traveled extensively and fished near the San Juan and Gulf Islands. Many a summer was spent there with his family.

Bill was a gregarious and dynamic personality who had many serious hobbies throughout his life. He trained and showed Morgan driving horses. He loved to cook and was a fantastic chef and wine connoisseur.

In 2006, Bill and his wife, Maureen, made their home in Ojai, California. He became an active member of the Roman Catholic faith and was a parishioner at St. Thomas Acquinas Catholic Church. This phase of his life brought great joy and peace to his later years. Bill passed from his earthly life knowing that he would be received in the Heavenly Kingdom in the arms of his savior, Jesus.

Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 30 years, Maureen Ryan; his four children Michael (Deborah); Laurie (Steven); Patrick (Cara); and Amanda (John); and loving grandfather to 4 beautiful grandchildren. He leaves behind a loving extended family; Deanna, Robert and Brian.

A small private family service was held at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church on Monday, February 24. Donations may be made in Bill’s memory to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church of Ojai California.
