Obituary

CHICOPEE – Rene H. Neveu, 82, of the Fairview section of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Saturday, February 15, 2014. He passed into Eternal Life at DeSoto Memorial Hospital in Arcadia, Florida surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Holyoke on September 20, 1931, a beloved son of the late Rene L. and Florence (Beaudoin) Neveu. Around 1936, he moved with his family to the Fairview section of Chicopee where he lived for the remainder of his life. Since 2007, Rene and his wife, Dorothy, were “snowbirds” in Arcadia, Florida and made many new friends where they resided for the winter months. He served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Salem and attained the rank of Seaman. He received the National Defense Service Medal and the Navy Occupation Medal. Following his military service, he returned to Chicopee and was employed for 35 years as a Chemical Reactor Operator at Hercules Incorporated in Chicopee and retired in 1995. Rene was a member of Fairview Council 4044 Knights of Columbus in Chicopee, the Moose Family Center in Chicopee Falls, the Shutesbury Athletic Association in Shutesbury, MA and a member of the USS Salem Association. Active in his faith, he was a communicant of Saint Anne Church in Fairview where he served during his childhood. He was a loving man who adored his family and showered them with his love and affection which was returned to him a thousand fold. He leaves his beloved wife and soul mate, Dorothy M. (Bergeron) Neveu. They were married on November 24, 1955 at the former Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church in the Willimansett section of Chicopee and were blessed with 58 years of happiness together. He also leaves his three devoted children, Sandra A. Suska and her husband, Michael, of the Feeding Hills section of Agawam, Robert R. Neveu of Chicopee, and Richard T. Neveu and his wife, Deonia, of Richmond, VA; his three cherished grandchildren whom he adored, Nicholas Suska of Westfield, Kellie-Anne Suska and her fiancé, Kody Archambault, of West Springfield, and Rileyann Neveu of Richmond, VA; his three dear brothers, John Neveu and his wife, Helen, of South Hadley, Florian Richard Neveu and his wife, Annette, of West Springfield, and Roger Neveu and his wife, Paulette, of Granby; his dear sister, Lorraine Evans and her husband, Ronald, of Summerfield, FL; his dear sister-in-law of the Bergeron family, Joan Puffer and her husband, Donald, of Granby; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, and extended members of the Neveu and Bergeron families. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by his dear sister-in-law, Loraine Neveu who was Called Home on April 15, 2006; and his dear brother-in-law and sister-in-law of the Bergeron family, Edward Bergeron and his wife, Shirley. His funeral will be held on Monday morning, February 24, 2014 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Fairview Chapels, (413-533-3307), 506 Britton Street, Chicopee, MA 01020, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Saint Anne Church, 30 College Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. His burial with US Navy Military Honors will follow the Mass at Notre Dame Cemetery, 63 Lyman Street, South Hadley, MA 01075. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, February 23, 2014 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The parking lot is located in the rear of the funeral home.
