Gene Register, 77, of Fitzgerald, died Friday, February 14, 2014, at Heritage Healthcare of Fitzgerald.
Funeral services will be held 2 PM, Monday, February 17, 2014, at The Paulk Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev Jeff Parmer officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Sunday evening at the funeral home.
Mr. Register was born March 13, 1936 in Fitzgerald to the late William Ramsey & Mary Griffin Register. He served his country honorably in the United States Army. Mr. Register worked as a credit collector for many furniture stores in Fitzgerald including Holland Davis, Home Furniture, Matthews, and Farmers Furniture. An avid country music lover, Mr. Register produced four records: two in Nashville, Tennessee and two in Dothan, Alabama. He worked the panhandle of Georgia, Florida, and Alabama as “Gene Register and the Gulf South Band”. He lived for a time in Nashville, Tennessee and worked there until the death of his promoter. He was the lead singer at the Taylor Made Opry in Dothan and also worked radio and television for Farley Taylor. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Mr. Register is survived by his wife of 46 years: Alice Register of Fitzgerald; children and their spouses: James Wendell “Jim” Smith & Kathy of Fitzgerald, Peggy Davis & Alan of Albany, Tina Walker & Glen of Callahan, Florida, and Elaine Fowler & Kyle of Fitzgerald; five grandchildren; four great-granddaughters; one brother: Jack Register of Buford; one sister: Mildred & Bobby Green of Macon; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers: J.W. Register, Clifford Register, Zeke Register, and Junior Register and one sister: Audrey Ring.
