Obituary


MIDDLEBOROUGH — Dr. Robert Burke Higgins, age 94 years, of Rochester, died Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at Golden Living-Oak Hill in Middleborough. He was the husband of Carol (Waite) Higgins.

Born in New York City, he was the son of the late Dr. William M. and Sarah (Burke) Higgins. A graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Medical School, he was associated with Mass. General Hospital for a period of time. After serving in the U.S. Army Medical Air Corps during WWII as a surgeon, he opened a urology practice in New Bedford.

Dr. Higgins had resided in Padanaram and Crescent Beach in Mattapoisett before settling in Rochester.

An avid sailor, he was a former member of the New Bedford Yacht Club and the Wamsutta Club. Over the years he attended Grace Episcopal Church in New Bedford and St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church in Marion.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children: Robert Tamworth Higgins, Shawn Higgins and Jamie Edmond; Carol's children; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was the brother of the late William Higgins and the late Cleopatra Higgins Barber.

His private arrangements are with the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., New Bedford, Ma.
