Germaine V. (Berube) Hughes, 80 of Whitman, passed away on February 4th in the Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital after a period of failing health. She was the beloved wife of Derwood W. Hughes, Jr.
She was born in Fall River and brought up in Cambridge. She was the daughter of the late Arthur and Corinne (Hamel) Berube. Germaine was a graduate of Our Lady of Pity High School in Cambridge.
Germaine has been a resident of Whitman for 46 years, a longtime communicant of the Holy Ghost Church and a former member of the Sodality. Before her marriage, she was the executive secretary for the Vice President of Shawmut Bank.
She loved music, dancing and was a devoted wife and a loving mother and sister.
In addition to her husband Derwood, she is survived by her sons Rev. Dr. Richard Hughes of North Reading and Daniel Hughes and his wife Jacqueline of Newport, ME., her daughter Sandra St. Louis and her husband Maurice of Abbot, ME., her brother Donald Berube and his wife Frances of Billerica, her sister Marie Brown and her husband Jack of Abington; also her grandchildren Sabrina Erickson, Robert, Jeffrey, Kayleigh and Justin Hughes and a loving aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Her services will be held on Saturday February 8th at 8:15 AM from the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth St. (Rt. 58 @ the rotary circle) Whitman, followed by a funeral mass at 9:00 AM in the Holy Ghost Church, Whitman. Burial will be in the St. James Cemetery, Whitman. Visiting hours will be held on Friday February 7th from 4:00-8:00 PM.
