LAVELLE, Mary Katherine “Kathy” (Long) Of Quincy, formerly of Jamaica Plain, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on January 26 at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Boston. Kathy was born in Holyoke on October 1, 1941 to John and Helen Long, the beloved wife of Philip Michael Lavelle, devoted mother of Matthew James, Patrick Coyle and Maura Ann (Byron) and loving grandmother of Cole and Gavin Lavelle. Kathy is predeceased by brothers John A. and James E. Long, sister June H. Long and leaves a brother David C. Long of Eastham as well as many nieces, nephews and cherished friends. A graduate of Ursuline Academy, Springfield and the College of St. Elizabeth in Morristown, NJ, Kathy taught Business at Holyoke High School and was a State Retiree having served with the Norfolk Juvenile Trial Court. Lifetime summer resident of her beloved beach community Misquamicut, RI, she always welcomed family and friends for a swim or an overnight. Kathy was active in her church, directing the Religious Education program at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Jamaica Plain and as a volunteer with "Helping Hands" at St. Clare's Church in Misquamicut. Her tremendous faith and love for people was evident in her special character and how she lived every day. Funeral from the William J. Gormley Funeral Home 2055 Centre St. WEST ROXBURY, Friday, January 31 at 9 am, followed by a Funeral Mass in Holy Name Church at 10 o’clock. Visiting hours Thursday 4-8 pm. Relatives and friends invited. Interment Mass. National Cemetery, Bourne at 1:15 pm.
