Obituary

Peter Allen Reid, cherished father, grandfather, brother and dear friend, left this world for the next on Monday, January 27, 2014.

Pete insisted on living his life all-out; helping his grandson Nick catch his first fish on his boat, training and hunting with his new best friend Cooper and best gal Casey…even making it to a Red Sox World Series game this year, despite suffering from cancer over the past 18 months.

Pete was born in 1944 in Providence, Rhode Island, a son of the late William A. and Roslyn (Kerney) Reid. In his 69 years, Pete accomplished many things. As a clinical psychologist, he helped so many heal their wounds and treat their substance abuse and relationship difficulties. He started his career working with autistic children and often reminisced about how much he learned from them. He was sponsor chairman for the Atlantic Frontier Chapter of Ducks Unlimited.

Pete was not your typical guy...he befriended people from almost every walk of life, everywhere he went. He shared his many passions, which inspired everyone around him from dog lovers to golfers to psychologists, to be their very best. Pete had an uncanny knack for tapping into the lowest common “human” denominator – love. He was terribly sentimental and had a sixth sense of how to make others comfortable with a unique combination of his sense of humor and his warm heart. He touched people at their core and didn’t allow anyone, even the toughest or the burliest, to shy away from truly experiencing the full breadth of life. He embodied the notion that to experience boundless moments of joy one must also endure life’s deepest sorrows.

Pete was a remarkable story teller. He would entertain a crowd (at the local dog park or a dinner party) by animating every detail of his latest adventure; either boating, dog training, hunting, fishing, golfing; or perhaps reminiscing about the old days working alongside his parents, sister and cousins at Hickory Hollow Farm. Pete was highly competitive and never backed down from a challenge. He excelled in every athletic endeavor he undertook, including playing college basketball at 5’6” tall.

He was very nice and he loved, loved to go on the boat and catch fish with his dogs (addition made by his granddaughter Grace).

He leaves his children, Cristine Reid Alilovich of San Rafael, CA and Seth Reid of Petaluma, CA; step-daughter, Cooper Warner, of Portland, OR, step-son, Griffin Warner of NY, NY, godson John Dudley Crouchley IV of Darien, CT; grandchildren, Grace E. Reid Alilovich and Nicholas J. Reid Alilovich of San Rafael, CA; a sister, Martha Brown of Glocester, RI; and his companion Dannie Kennedy of Cambridge, MA.

A memorial service to which relatives and friends are invited will be held be held on Saturday, February 1st at 11:00 am at the St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Greenville, RI. Please wear your best “camo” outfit in honor of Pete!
