LOWELL—Richard J. O’Malley, Jr., 81 years old, died Tuesday evening at the Lowell General Hospital. He was the husband of the late Mary Louise O’Malley, who died in January of 1980.
He was born in Lowell, on September 30, 1923, a son of the late Richard J. and Stella (Brady) O’Malley, and graduated from the Sacred Heart Grammar School, Lowell High School and Lowell Commercial College.
Mr. O’Malley served in the United States Navy during World War II. He had been employed as a lithographer by the Courier Corporation for over 35 years, until his retirement.
He was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots, and was instrumental in the formation of the original “Silver Mittens”, in Lowell.
Surviving him are a son: Richard J. O’Malley, III, of Montville, ME; a sister: Sissy O’Malley-Grand, and her husband Ernest, of Lowell; a brother: James B. O’Malley, and his wife Marjorie, of York, ME; a sister-in-law: Helene O’Malley, a brother-in-law: William Lyons, and his wife Theresa, all of Lowell; three grandchildren: Shauna O’Malley, of Ayer; Kaitlin Lash, of Lowell; and Matthew O’Malley, of South Carolina; two great-grandchildren: Jarred and Connor Lash; as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was the brother of the late John and Francis O’Malley.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM on Sunday, October 16th, at the MAHONEY FUNERAL HOME, 187 Nesmith Street, (Rte. 38). His Funeral Mass to be offered Monday morning, October 17th, at 10:30 AM at the IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH, Lowell. Burial in St. Patrick Cemetery, Lowell.
