Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Mary A. (Anderson) Tshonas, 87, a longtime resident of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Friday, January 17, 2014. She passed into Eternal Life at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family and her wonderful caregivers. She was born in Springfield on March 24, 1926, a beloved daughter of the late William J. and Mary (Rooney) Anderson. She was raised in Springfield, graduated in 1943 from the High School of Commerce and was a lifelong resident of Springfield. For about seven years, Mary enjoyed her apartment at Keystone Woods in Springfield and Heritage Hall in Agawam where she made many new friends. For many years, Mary was employed by the New England Telephone Company and worked at their State Street office. She previously worked at the former American Bosch and at the former A & P Office, both in Springfield. Active in her faith, Mary was a lifelong communicant of the former Our Lady of Hope Church on Hungry Hill in Springfield. Most of all, Mary was a wonderful homemaker to her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and soul mate, Peter C. Tshonas who was Called Home on June 22, 1985. They were married on August 12, 1950 at Saint Matthew Church in Indian Orchard and were blessed with almost 35 years of happiness together. She leaves her devoted children, John C. Tshonas and his wife, Kathi, of Brewster, MA, Susan T. Beliveau and her husband, Michael, of Chicopee, Mary T. McCormick and her husband, Timothy, of Wilbraham and Peter M. Tshonas of Ellington, CT; her eight cherished grandchildren whom she adored, Rebecca S. Tshonas and Michael P. Beliveau, Kelly C., Lauren E., Joseph P. and Brian T. McCormick, and Rachel M. and Nicholas Tshonas; her dear sisters and brother, Helen Norton of Broadbrook, CT, Joseph Anderson and his wife, Gloria, of Agawam and Alice Chrusciel and her husband, Gerald, of Newtown, CT; her dear sister-in-law, Mary V. Anderson of Agawam; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and extended members of the Tshonas and Anderson families. Besides her parents and her husband, she was also predeceased by her three dear sisters and two dear brothers, Catherine Anderson, Ethel Gamache, Grace McGrath, William Anderson and John Anderson. Her family would like to thank all the wonderful medical professionals and caregivers who compassionately cared for Mary throughout the past several years. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday morning, January 22, 2014 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. Her burial will follow the Mass at Saint Michael Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Her family has requested that memorial donations be made in her memory to either the Children’s Miracle Network at Baystate Medical Center, c/o Development Office, 6th Floor, 280 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01199 or to the Shriners Hospital for Children, (Specify Springfield), 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
