LOVETT: Gabriel H., age 92, Professor Emeritus of Wellesley College, died peacefully on Sunday, December 22, 2013, in Hyannis, Massachusetts. He was the beloved husband of the late Patricia A. (Coleman) Lovett for 52 years. Born in Berlin, Germany, he was the son of Russian immigrants, David and Cornelia Lvovitch. The family made their way to Paris when Hitler came to power in 1933. In 1939, it came time to flee again, and Gabriel’s mother placed him on the last available ship leaving France for New York as the war broke out. The voyage to his new country began alone and in darkness. All lights aboard the ship were left out lest the German Navy see the ship during its crossing. He arrived in New York City and was reunited with his parents there a short time later. They had escaped France through the south with the help of a network of friends and were able to sail to freedom. Gabriel continued his education at City College of New York and earned a Master of Arts Degree and Doctorate in Spanish at New York University. He immediately joined the faculty at NYU teaching Spanish in their Graduate Program. He moved to New Jersey with Patricia as their young family started to grow. In 1960, he accepted the position of Director of NYU Abroad, and the Lovetts lived in Madrid, Spain until the end of his directorship in 1965. Returning to New Jersey, he resumed his work as a Spanish Professor at NYU for four more years. In 1969, the family moved to Wellesley, where Gabriel accepted a Professorship in the Spanish Department at Wellesley College, becoming one of the earliest male professors at the college. He enjoyed teaching at Wellesley until his retirement in 1987. After retiring, Gabriel and Patricia lived in Milford prior to settling in Framingham and enjoyed many memorable trips together. Gabriel was also a Chess Master, a voracious reader, and enjoyed tennis well into his eighties. Predeceased by Patricia and a daughter, Diana, he is survived by three sons, David R. Lovett and his wife Kathleen of Marstons Mills, Richard H. Lovett and his wife Elaine of East Bridgewater, and Andrew M. Lovett and his wife MinYi of Randolph; a daughter, Deborah A. Lovett of Dedham; and 11 grandchildren, Amy, Erin, Kathryn, Christopher, Paige, Emma, Nori, Beverly, Claire, Joseph, and Dylan. There will be an interment ceremony at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne, MA on January 31st, followed by a memorial gathering at the Wellesley College Club.Donations may be made in Gabriel’s memory to VNA Hospice & Palliative Care, 255 Independence Drive, Hyannis, MA 02601.
