Obituary

MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA: John D. Goodall, 91, died peacefully Friday, January 10, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the beloved husband of Helene H. (Chadwick) Goodall.
Born in Beverly on November 26, 1922, he was the son of the late William and Margaret (Dobson) Goodall. He was a graduate of Story High School and Wentworth Institute of Technology. A U. S. Navy veteran of World War II, he served in the Pacific Theater and was honorably discharged in 1946.
John was a lifelong resident of Manchester-by-the Sea, particularly Kettle Cove where he spent his childhood exploring the shore and coast, developing a respect for conservation of the environment. His joy was in marriage to Helene and raising a family at his childhood home on Ocean Street. Working full-time as a technical draftsman for General Electric, he also devoted time to wetland conservation, recycling and the Boy Scouts.
John, kind-hearted and quiet, loved any occasion for a gathering of friends and family. You could count on him when others failed or gave up.
In addition to his wife of sixty-eight years, he is survived by his children, John Dobson Goodall Jr., Carolyn Goodall, Joseph C. Goodall and his wife, Ellen Thompson Goodall and Ann Goodall Eastwood and her husband, Stephen J. Eastwood; two grandchildren, Tristan Goodall and Jason Goodall, husband of Jeff Ouellette; and devoted friend and family member, Jack Burke.
A celebration of John’s life will be held on Saturday, February 22nd in the First Parish Church, 1 Chapel Lane, Manchester-by-the-Sea at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow at the American Legion Hall directly behind the church. Expressions of sympathy may be made in his memory to the Boy Scouts Troop #3, c/o Thomas Keough, 20 Lincoln St., Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA 01944 or the Amaral-Bailey Post #113, American Legion, 14 Church St., Manchester-by-the-Sea, MA 01944.
