TEWKSBURY - Virginia D. “Ginny” (Thomas) Abbott, age 90, died peacefully while surrounded by her beloved family, Thursday morning, January 9, at her Tewksbury home, following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late former Tewksbury Selectman, Thomas A. Abbott, who died in 1968.
She was born in Boston, July 3, 1923, the daughter of the late Herbert and Mary (Davidson) Thomas, and was raised in Medford, where she graduated from Medford High School. She had resided in Tewksbury since 1953.
She worked as a switchboard operator beginning with New England Telephone, moved on to Instrumentation Labs in Lexington, and retired from Dynamics Research Company in Andover.
In her earlier years, she was a member of the Tewksbury Firefighters Ladies Auxiliary, and also enjoyed membership at the former Tewksbury Veteran’s Association.
She is survived by two daughters, Virginia A. “Ginny” Colbert, and Jane M. Quercia and her husband Louis, all of Tewksbury; a son, Michael T. Abbott of West Hills, CA; seven grandchildren, Joseph and his wife Lee Colbert Jr., Maryjane and her husband Richard Gallucci, Patricia and her husband David Morneault, all of Tewksbury, Kenneth and his wife Marsha Colbert of Naples, FL, Kathleen and her husband Ronald Anderson of Tewksbury, Thomas “T.J.” Abbott of Melrose, and Scott and his wife Tiffani Abbott of Windham, NH; thirteen great grandchildren, Joseph Colbert, Joseph, Michael and Janemarie Kukler, David, Thomas, Daniel, and Samantha Morneault, William and Becket Colbert, Brian and Alyssa Anderson, and Lillianna Abbott; two great great grandchildren, Daniel and Emily; one niece Regina (Thomas) and her husband Scott Rich of Dracut.
She was also mother of the late Thomas A. Abbott Jr, mother-in-law of the late Joseph E. Colbert; great grandmother of the late Brady Colbert; and sister of the late Kenneth Thomas and Herbert Thomas Jr.
Her Funeral Mass at was celebrated Tuesday, January 14, in St. Dorothy’s Church, Wilmington. Burial was in Tewksbury Cemetery. Memorials are encouraged to the Samaritans, 41 West St., 4th Floor, Boston, MA 02111, visit samaritanshope.org
