NEW BEDFORD — Rose J. Almeida, age 90 years, a lifelong resident of New Bedford, died Saturday, January 4, 2014 at St. Luke's Hospital.
Daughter of the late Francis D. and Josepha (Gomes) Almeida, she was born in this city and was a graduate of N.B. High School. Employed at Savoy Nursing Home as a cook, she was the matriarch of five generations of her family and a communicant of Our Lady of Assumption Church.
She is survived by her children: Rosetta Fernandes, Marcelino "Sonny Boy" Almeida and his wife Toni, Josephine "Penarche," Russell W. and Bernadette M. Almeida. Mother of the late Vaughan L. and Gordon C. Almeida. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; 27 great-great grandchildren; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
She was predeceased by four brothers and four sisters, and her late companion Marcelino E. Gomes.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday from 5 - 8 p.m. in the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., N.B. Service from the funeral home on Thursday at 8 a.m., followed by a Mass at Our Lady of Assumption Church at 9 a.m. and burial in Rural Cemetery.
