Obituary

Harold S. Glenzel of Naples, FL and Hingham, MA passed away after a short illness on January 6, 2014. Husband of beloved late wife Lois (Dickson) Glenzel, he leaves his son Steve Glenzel and his wife Katherine of Hingham, MA; daughter Karen Bellino of Simsbury, CT.; four grandchildren – Abigail of Mechanicsburg, PA; Matthew of Hingham, MA,; Benjamin Adams and his wife Sherry of East Granby CT.; Jonathan Adams of Jacksonville NC. and great granddaughter Elizabeth Adams of East Granby CT. He also leaves Harriet Glenzel of Athol, MA, wife of his late brother, James (Jim) and two cousins – Richard Paul of Redding CT and Beverly Rymer of Springfield, OR.

Born in Boston, a graduate of Somerville High School, US Navy World War II (Second Class Petty Officer and commissioned Ensign after college graduation). Graduated Phi Beta Kappa College of William and Mary and Tau Beta Pi from MIT in 1951.

Field engineer and superintendent on various construction projects in NY, PA and NJ. Estimator, project manager and contract negotiator for building contractor in Gouverneur, NY. From 1962 to 1988 held various positions with New England Telephone Company in Springfield, Fitchburg, Portland and Boston. Retired in 1988 as General Manager, Corporate Services. Registered engineer in NY, MA, RI, ME, NH, and VT.

Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and past secretary of its Boston Section. Past President of the Massachusetts Building Congress and of the New England Construction User’s Council. Past member of the National Business Round Table Construction Committee and the American Arbitration Association. Past officer of the Boston Harbor Associates and member of the Friends of Post Office Square Committee involved in the design and construction off the Post Office Square garage and park in Boston.

Past President of the Gouverneur, NY and Hingham, MA Rotary Clubs. Former member of the Hingham Yacht Cub and Cohasset Golf Club.

A memorial service will be held at Linden Ponds on Saturday January 11 at 11AM in the Linden Ponds Performing Arts Center at Derby Club House. Burial will be private and take place at Bellevue Cemetery in Harvard, MA.
