Obituary

Alice (Broadbent) Todd, 93, after a full and wonderful life, passed away at StoneRidge Retirement Community on Saturday, January 4, 2014.

The daughter of the late William and Alice (Harwood) Garne, she was born in Darwin, Lancashire England and settled with her family in Cumberland, RI, at the age of one. She graduated from Cumberland High School where she met Irvine L. Broadbent. They married in 1942 and moved their family to Cedarville, Massachusetts in 1950, settling in Woods Hole in 1954.

Alice worked at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution as secretary to the Department Chair in the Geophysics Department. Irvine passed away in 1967 and she married Gordon F. Todd of Cumberland, RI. Gordon passed away after 25 years of marriage. Alice moved to Mystic, CT and has lived at StoneRidge for over eight years.

Alice is a member of the John Wesley Methodist Church in Falmouth, MA; she also enjoyed attending the Mystic Congregational Church and Calvary Church in Stonington. She had been a member of the Eastern Star, social member of the Stonington Country Club, Woods Hole Golf Club, Falmouth Garden Club, and Woods Hole Woman's Club. At StoneRidge she served as secretary of the Welcoming Committee and a hostess at the Newcomer's Table.

Alice had many hobbies including refinishing furniture, hand braiding rugs, collecting antiques, playing piano and golf; but her long-time passions were gardening and playing bridge.

Alice always considered her family her greatest treasure. She is survived by her two children, Linda Hare and her husband Gerald Hare of Glens Falls, NY and Richard Broadbent and his wife Louisa Broadbent of Mystic, CT, three grandchildren, Mark and his wife Stacie Broadbent of Newington, CT, Gregory and his wife Melissa Broadbent of Mystic, CT, Sara Broadbent of Medford, MA, two great-grandchildren Cooper Broadbent and Hailie Broadbent of Newington, CT, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Her family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, January 10, from 4:00 to 6:00pm at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Mystic. A Funeral Service will be conducted on Saturday, January 11 at 10:30am in the Chapel at Highland Memorial Park Cemetery, 1 Rhode Island Avenue, Johnston RI. A memorial gathering will be held for StoneRidge residents.
