GLOUCESTER: Cynthia Laura (Golart) Asaro, 79, wife of Daniel S. Asaro, died unexpectedly early Thursday morning, January 2, 2014, at the Addison Gilbert Hospital.
Born in Gloucester on September 11, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Laura (Mello) Golart.
Cynthia & her husband raised seven children. As a young woman she worked as a waitress at the Tavern and while raising her children she would work periodically for Lufkin's Catering.
A graduate of Gloucester High in 1952, she decided to return to school to become a Registered Nurse at the age of 40 years old. She graduated from North Shore Community College with an Associate's Degree in Nursing in 1979. She started working at Addison Gilbert Hospital as a Nurse's Aide in 1975 and then as an RN. She retired from Addison Gilbert just a few months ago, having worked in Medical Records.
At age 50 she had a significant stroke which prevented her from working for about two and a half years. Being very strong willed, she worked diligently with family and friends to return to complete independence. After her stroke, Cynthia was a vital part of the Stroke Club which was held at Addison Gilbert Hospital once a month. She was a true inspiration to others who were afflicted by a stroke because of her positive attitude.
Over the years, she was a member of the Council on Aging, past President of the St. Peter's Women's Guild, Treasurer for the Son's of Italy and a member of the Guild of Our Lady of Good Voyage Church.
Cynthia had a great love for her family, especially her grandchildren. Every Sunday, until recent years, she made dinner, usually pasta & sauce, for her family and any "strays" that may show up at the table. Her home was always open and when the family owned a pool it was always filled with family and friends throughout the summer.
Every summer she would venture out to Stellwagon Bank to enjoy the whales with Cape Ann Whale Watch. Upon moving to East Gloucester she managed to keep the neighborhood birds well fed. One spring she even "adopted" a turkey who became very attached to her. But eventually he "left the nest" like all her children.
Traveling was always an activity she enjoyed, as well as going to the North Shore Music Theater with her friends. One of her favorite trips was to Disney World with her family, where she probably had more fun than anyone.
In addition to her husband of sixty years, she leaves four daughters; Kathryn, Julianne McCarthy, Lauren, Dianne of Boise, ID and three sons, David (wife, Brenda), Daniel (wife, Sherrie) of Manchester NH, Dana (wife, Laurie) of Boise, ID, as well as grandchildren, Kristy Asaro of Watertown, MA, Lynn (Asaro) Surucu of Washington, DC, Michael, Kenneth of Phoenix AZ, Joseph, Victoria Flannagan, Andrew and Aaron of Boise, ID and the love of her life, great-grandchild, Kendall. She is also survived by her brother, Milton Golart of Oregon; sisters, Virginia (Golart) Collins of Texas and Marilyn (Golart) Ferrant wife of Andrew of Florida, brother-in-law Samuel Asaro (Louisa), Anthony Testaverde (Jean) and sister-in-law Rosemarie Asaro and many nieces & nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by Janice (Golart) and Dale Burdette, Elizabeth (Golart) and Robert Ferrant, Marjorie (Frost) Golart, Roland Collins, Peter and Jean (Sonia) Asaro, Marion (Asaro) and Joseph Curcuru, Rose (Asaro) Testaverde, Vito Asaro, Mary (Asaro) and Jerry Pallazola.
Her funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday morning in the Our Lady of Good Voyage Church at 9:30 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester from 3 – 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to the Stroke Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231 or (www.strokeassociation.org).
