Obituary

SPRINGFIELD – Bella T. “Mama” (Trottier) Ruel, 94, a longtime resident of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on New Year’s Eve, Tuesday, December 31, 2013. She passed into Eternal Life at her home surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family, her wonderful compassionate caregivers, and Mercy Hospice. She was born at home in Bromptonville, Province of Quebec, Canada on June 25, 1919, a beloved daughter of the late Arthur J. and Leda (Allaire) Trottier. In 1925, she came with her family to Wilder, Vermont where she was schooled and raised. In 1946, she moved with her late husband, Roland, to Springfield where she lived for the remainder of her life. Bella became a stay at home mom to raise her family where she also provided child care for many children. She was a wonderful homemaker to her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. During her leisure time, she enjoyed candlepin bowling. Active in her faith, she was a longtime communicant of Holy Name Church and the former Saint Joseph Church, both in Springfield. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Roland E. “Papa” Ruel who was Called Home on April 9, 2011. They were married on May 5, 1946 at Saint Anthony Church in White River Junction, Vermont and were blessed with over 64 years of happiness together. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her loving son, John P. Ruel who was Called Home on May 2, 2007; her cherished grandson, Marc A. Toniatti who was Called Home on June 18, 2011; her dear brothers, Donat Trottier and Emmanuel “Pete” Trottier; and her dear sisters, Eva Trottier, Joan Goodreau, and Majella Bellavance. She leaves her five loving children, Gerard R. “Jerry” Ruel of Alexandria, VA, Philip F. Ruel and his wife, Linda, of Windsor Locks, CT, Theresa A. “Terry” Patterson and her husband, Gary, of Springfield with whom she lived, Mary E. “Beth” Beaudoin and her husband, Roger, of Nashua, NH, and Joanne C. Edens and her husband, Raymond, of Springfield; her 12 cherished grandchildren; her six cherished great-grandchildren; her dear brothers, Nova Trottier and his wife, Pauline, of Claremont, NH, and Robert Trottier of West Lebanon, NH; her dear sister-in-law, Barbara Trottier of Winter Haven, FL; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, and extended members of the Ruel and Trottier families. Her funeral will be held on Monday morning, January 6, 2014 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Aldenville Chapels, (413-532-9806), 13 Dale Street, Chicopee, MA 01020 (funeral home will open at 11 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:30 p.m. in Sainte Rose de Lima Church, 600 Grattan Street, Chicopee, MA 01020. Her Committal Service will follow the Mass at 2 p.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, January 5, 2014 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The parking lot and main entrance are located in the rear of the funeral home at 20 Lafayette Street, Chicopee, MA 01020.
