Obituary

Walter (Skip) Durant, 73, died on December 26, 2013 at his home. He is survived by his two sons, Lee Durant and Robb Darula and lifetime partner Joan Durant. He also leaves a sister, Judith Brayman of Stonington, nieces and nephews.

He was a graduate of Fitch High School and Mitchell College. He joined the Air Force in 1961 with tours to the Philippines and Viet Nam. Airman Durant served in the 31st Air Rescue Squadron as a hydraulic specialist as well as a volunteer on rescue missions. He was awarded the Air Force commendation medal for courage and heroism while at a Vietnamese air base.

Walter’s Air Force training led to the start of Durant Machine Co. specializing in hydraulic marine tools for which he held several patents. He continued to own and operate the company for 50 years.

Walter was a member of the Mystic VFW and served as commander for several years. He was instrumental in the rescue of the Mystic Memorial Parade.

Walter’s last ten years were spent cruising around the world. He also enjoyed several motorcycle tours in the US and Europe.

A Graveside Service with full military honors will be conducted on Saturday, January 11, at 10:30am at Elm Grove Cemetery in Mystic followed by a Celebration of Life at the Mystic VFW.

In lieu of flowers donations in his name can be mailed to the VFW and made payable to Southeastern CT River Estuary Stewardship (Se*Cress). Walter was a great lover of the marine environment in Mystic and its rich boating history.
