Woodard “Woody” Tuttle

...WWII Battle at Anzio, Italy; 84

TEWKSBURY - Woodard “Woody” Tuttle, age 84, a Veteran of one of WWII’s most celebratedbattles, died Thursday, Oct. 7, peacefully at his Tewksbury home. He was the husband of EleanorJean (Marr) Tuttle, who died in 1989.

“Woody” was born Dec. 30, 1919, in Worcester, a son of the late Webster and Julie (Arbell)Tuttle. He was raised in Everett and had lived in Tewksbury since 1954.

Upon graduation from high school, he entered the Army. He served in North Africa, Sicily, andlater mainland Italy with the 39th Combat Engineers. During his three years of active combatduty, he participated in many battles, including the landing at Anzio, Italy.

Upon discharge, he worked as a “swing-man” automobile assembler at the Ford MotorCompany’s Somerville plant. When the plant closed, he became a distributor for UTTDistributors, the franchise for “Wise” brand potato chips and snacks.

He was most proud of being published numerous times in the Saturday Evening Post’s “Post-scripts” section. He will be best rememberd for his dry wit and keen sense of humor.

During the 1960's, he was active in the formation of Tewksbury Youth Baseball League, and theTewksbury Young Men’s Bowling League. Long after his children had grown, he continued to beactive in the Tewksbury Little League organization. He was also an active participant in theTewksbury Victory Garden. He was a former member of the Melrose V.F.W., and the AFL-CIOTeamsters.

He was also a horse owner, and ran several thoroughbred horses at Boston’s Suffolk Downs.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Arthur and his wife Kathleen (Riley) Tuttle ofWindham, NH, Woodard and his wife Margaret (Lawless) Tuttle of Tewksbury; sixgrandchildren, Laura, Arthur Jr., Sara Riley and Adam Resse all of NH, Brendan and SarahTuttle both of Tewksbury; one nephew, Stephen Leon of Newton.

He was also brother of the late Fay Leon and Franklin Tuttle.

His funeral was held Monday, Oct. 11, in the funeral home.Burial with Army honors followed at Tewksbury Cemetery.
