Obituary

John Cheney Worthington, Jr.

November 21, 1927 – December 25, 2013

John Worthington of Truro, died on Christmas Day, 18 days after he lost his beloved wife Lucinda Worthington. John was born in New York City to John Cheney Worthington and Ada Elizabeth Worthington. When he was three years old the family moved to Depot Road in Truro.

John attended the Truro Central School and Kent School in Connecticut where he played football and hockey and spent some of the “happiest days of his life”. He served in the United States Navy before attending the The University of Washington in Seattle and graduating with a degree from the School of Fisheries. He worked for Caribou Fisheries for many years, before starting his own company Ocean Clear Inc., based in Gloucester, Mass.

A charming, loving, funny man, John was in his element with his wife and five daughters. As the only male in a household of women and having had a strong mother as a role model, he was often as he called it “the chief cook and bottle washer”. He made his girls feel that the “world was their oyster” and that they could achieve anything they put their minds to.

Truro was his home and his heart, as his parents before him had reveled in the daily beauty of the Pamet River valley, so did John. He and his wife Lucinda ran a sailing club at the Pamet Harbor for many years, where his daughters and countless other youngsters learned to sail. He took every opportunity to be out in the Cape Cod Bay sailing or fishing and he took great pride in the fact that he taught his daughters how to “catch a bluefish from a Sunfish on a hand line.”

A great story teller he continued to garner fans as his daughters had children of their own who were ready and eager to hear their grandfather’s “Navy stories” and tales of wild beasts and beings lurking in the hills of Truro.

He loved all animals and passed that love on to his children. In later years, he was rarely seen without his dog Pamet, by his side.

He was generous with his humor and his kindness. He touched many people’s lives, as he was a good and thoughtful listener and a loyal friend.

He loved his wife, his children and his grandchildren beyond measure. He is survived by his brother Christopher Worthington, of Boston, his sister Diana Worthington of Truro, his beloved daughters and their families: Jan Worthington and her partner, Lon Morris of Truro, Pamela Worthington of Portland Maine; Susan Brennan and husband Bill of Westwood; Mary Worthington, of Weston; and Patricia Worthington of Brewster. He was beloved Grandpa Johnny to Cecilie and Spencer Brennan of Somerville; Carson Brennan of Chicago, Ill., Jessica Franklin of Los Angeles, Ca., Anabel Franklin of New York City; Carla, Derek and Kyle Kachadurian of Weston; and Aidan Kinsella of Brewster. He leaves many loving nieces and nephews and cousins and his dog Pamet who lives now with his daughter Mary.

John’s family is so very grateful to the staff at EPOCH of Harwich and Life Choice Hospice for the sensitive and kind care they gave to our father in the last years of his life.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to The Provincetown Fisherman’s Memorial Fund.

A celebration of John and Lucinda’s life will be jointly held at St Mary’s of the Harbor, Provincetown, on Saturday, December 28, at 11:00 am.
