WORCESTER- Jack McLemore passed away September 30, 2004 peacefully with his family by his side at Memorial Hospital. Born July 25, 1921 in Crawford, Mississippi, he was the son of the late Addie (Hinkle) and Ben McLemore.
He leaves his wife of 59 years, Jean (Person) McLemore, a daughter Patricia Sanders wife of Kendall Sanders, three grandsons, Adam Sanders and Walter Sanders and fiance’ Leighann Keil all of Worcester, Justin Sanders and his wife Bobbi Sanders of Jacksonville, Florida and a great grandson Christopher. Also several nephews and nieces.
He served in the 1st Division 26th INFANTRY during World War II and made the invasion of Africa, Sicily, Normandy, Battle of the Bulge, and the Huergen Forrest. He was awarded 2 Purple Hearts, Bronze Star w/2 oakleaf clusters, the Silver Star, also awards from the French and Belgian Governments. He received Veteran of the year Award in 1991, Armed forces award of Merit in 2002. He was The State Commander of the Military Order of The Purple Heart, Past Commander of American Legion Post 319, Past Commander of the Worcester Veterans Council, Life Member of Chapter #4, V.F.W. Post 6907 West Boylston, Battle of the Bulge Central Mass. Chapter #22, Society of the 1st Infantry Division, also Blue Spaders 26th Infantry.
He retired in 1983 as maintenance supervisor from Lincoln Nursing Home and had been a local carpenter for 40 years. He was an active member of Greendale Peoples’ Church serving on many committees. He spoke at many local high schools to Jr. R.O.T.C. students.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, Oct. 4, in Greendale People’s Church. Burial will be private. Calling hours will be held from 5-8 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 3, at Nordgren Memorial Chapel, 300 Lincoln St. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Memorial Fund of Greendale People’s Church, 25 Francis Street, Worcester, MA 01606.
