Felipe P. Novo, M.D.
Retired Tewksbury Hospital Medical Director

TEWKSBURY: Felipe P. Novo, M.D., age 86, of Lowell, formerly of Tewksbury, passed away at the Lowell General Hospital-Saints Campus on Thursday, December 19, 2013.
He was the beloved husband of Gloria (Tareila) Novo, with whom he celebrated their 26th wedding anniversary on March 20th, and the late Mary P. Novo, who passed away in 1986.
Born in Cienfuegos, Cuba on October 22, 1927, he was the son of the late Genaro and Pilar (Arias) Novo.
Dr. Novo graduated from the University of Cienfuegos in 1946 and the University of Havana Medical School in 1952.
In 1953, he came to the United States and completed his residency at the former St. John's Hospital in Lowell. In 1954, Dr. Novo joined the medical staff at the Tewksbury Hospital and was appointed as Medical Director in 1966, serving in that capacity for more than 25 years.
He devoted his life to providing compassionate care to his patients. His colleagues referred to him as "a man with many hats" as he provided multiple services including pathology and anesthesiology.
Upon his retirement, the Tewksbury Hospital Medical Library was dedicated in his name.
Dr. Novo was a Board Eligible Pathologist and was an Associate Professor of Pathology at the Tufts University Dental School. He also served as Physician for the Tewksbury Public School System and the Tewksbury Pop Warner Football Program.
During his retirement years, he enjoyed traveling to Spain, Martha's Vineyard and throughout the United States. He also enjoyed time spent at his vacation home in York, Maine.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his four children, Phillip P. Novo and his companion Ellen O'Connor of Acton, Kathleen M. Shea and her husband William of Hudson, NH, Sheila A. Hegarty and her husband Timothy of Tewksbury, and Richard M. Novo and his wife Rhonda Brown of Andover; four grandchildren, Andrew Shea, Terence and Patrick Hegarty, and David Novo. He was particularly close to his New Jersey relatives; his sister, Anna and her husband Humberto and their children, Margarita and her husband Melanio and their three children, Gregory, Jonathan and Melanio, Ofelia and her husband Javier and there two children, Jessica and Daniel, all from New Jersey. He is also survived by his sisters, Lila and Nena both in Cuba; also several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be Monday, Dec. 23, from 3-7 p.m., at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. His funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 24, at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Tewksbury Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Jimmy Fund, c/o Dana Farber Cancer Institute, P.O.
