James J. Maher Sr....Lowell manager and retired Insulators and Asbestos Union; age 67
TEWKSBURY - James J. Maher Sr, age 67, a former asbestos worker and more recently anOperations Manager at a Lowell electronic company, died Tuesday morning, Oct. 5, at hisTewksbury home. He was the husband of Ruth D. (LaFreniere) Maher, with whom he hadcelebrated a 45th wedding anniversary this past June13th.
He was born in Malden, Feb. 22, 1937, the son of the late Francis and Irene (Hallissey) Maher. He graduated Malden Catholic High School in 1954. He had lived in Tewksbury since 1960.In 1993, he retired from the Insulators and Asbestos Workers Local 6. He then joined withElectronic Processing, Inc. of Lowell as Operations Manager. He was instrumental in designingand developing the first State approved C.R.T. and electronics recycling facility and establishingprocesses and procedures which allowed the company to expand operation to multiple locationson the East Coast.In his earlier years he was active in youth sports, coaching Tewksbury Little League. He was afounding member of the Tewksbury Youth Skating Association, and had served on the Board ofDirectors and as coach at various levels.Upon retirement he especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James J. Maher Jr., and his wifeMaura (Caveney) Maher of Bedford, NH; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judith and her husbandGeorge Roth of Plymouth, MA, Suzanne and her husband Daniel Blackwell of Wilmington; threesisters and two brothers-in-law, Mary and her husband “Reb” Wills, and Joan Deady all ofNashua , Theresa and her husband Stan Dmohowski of Framingham; a sister-in-law, CynthiaPisco of Winthrop; and seven grandchildren, Charissa, Joseph, and James Maher III, Melissa,George, and Jessica Roth, and Thomas Blackwell.He was also brother of the late Margaret Dewey.
Funeral services were held Friday Oct. 8, in the funeral home.
